Plans have been drawn up to build 118 new homes and a home for the elderly with 60 places on a wedge of green land in Cromer.

But there are already concerns over traffic management around the 6.35ha site, which is between Overstrand and Northrepps roads, opposite Cromer’s golf course

Gladman Developments, based in Cheshire, has lodged an application for the scheme to North Norfolk District Council.

Its proposal is for a “high quality, attractive residential development set within a landscape of woodland, street trees and publicly accessible areas of open space, including a ‘greenway’.”

The application says: “The proposed development at Overstrand Road will help to address local housing need, including a need for affordable housing and specialist elderly care accommodation.

“The development provides an opportunity to reinforce Overstrand Road as a primary route into Cromer by creating an attractive and inviting gateway from the east of the town.”

Emma Spagnola, Cromer’s deputy mayor and district councillor for Suffield Park ward, which includes the site, said the plans for were “outline planning permission” and merely sought to establish the principles of access onto and from the site.

Ms Spagnola said the town council would hold a meeting to discuss the plans after the local government elections on May 4.

She said her own view was that there seemed to be insufficient pedestrian access to and from the site, and that there needed to be safer access from Overstrand Road and a reduced speed limit along the length of the site.

Ms Spagnola said: “Traffic calming needs to be considered as we know locally there is speeding along the frontage of the site on Overstrand Road.”

She said she also had concerns over the plan’s environmental impact, and encouraged people to voice their own views to NNDC and herself.
