North Norfolk arts festival set to kick off in style with packed programme of events, from drumming to drama
PUBLISHED: 09:27 11 October 2018
An evening of choral classics performed by the renowned Norwich Cathedral Choir will launch this year’s Coast Arts festival programme, which features an eclectic line-up ranging from exhibitions, competitions and workshops, to film, drama and a literary events.
For the first time, Coast will be teaming up with the Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand, to host a week-long series of music performances, from classical and folk, to soul and jazz.
Other events include a talk on Cromer war memorial, an African drumming session, a photography workshop with former Eastern Daily Press photographer Sam Robbins, a soul night, and an exhibition of music-themed work by North Norfolk Organisation of Visual Artists (NOVA).
The week will culminate with a performance of Rebellious Sisterhood – Votes for Women, at Cromer Community Centre.
Presented by Broad Horizons Theatre Company, the moving and thought-provoking play, which takes a fly-on-the-wall look at the private lives of Britain’s suffragettes, is stopping off at Cromer as part of a tour of East Anglian venues.
The festival, which runs from October 20-27, will also feature a literary tea with local author and TV scriptwriter Marc Peirson - whose credits include Emmerdale, EastEnders and Holby City - and writer and performer Andrew Taft, who has written for The Bill, EastEnders and the BBC drama Monarch of the Glen.
Coast, which was founded as the Cromer and Sheringham Arts and Literary Festival nine years ago by a small group of arts-enthusiasts, originally ran an annual week-long arts festival aimed at celebrating the wealth of artistic talent in the north Norfolk area.
It has since evolved to include a year-round programme, with organisers teaming up with venues ranging from pubs and village halls, to theatres and churches to stage concerts, films and workshops all over the area.
Norwich Cathedral Choir will be performing at St Martin’s Church, Overstrand at 7.30pm on October 12. Tickets are available from the Belfry Centre, phone 01263 579196.
