It has been 20 years since Cromer hosted its first Folk on the Pier ‘folk rock’ music festival, and this year’s line-up is shaping up to be better than ever.

Scott Butler, event organiser, said he was thrilled so many top acts including Richard Digance, Stompin Dave Allen, the Hopi Hopkins Trio and Elvis Fontenot & the Sugar Bees were taking part.

Mr Butler said: “At the 2017 event I asked the regular festival audience who they would most like to see to celebrate the 20 years and I am pleased to say that I have managed to book about 80pc of those suggested.

“Many of the acts have played the festival a number of times in those 20 years, so over the years I must have got something right”.

Folk on the Pier will kick off with an opening ‘Kinder Shores’ charity gig on Thursday, May 10, which is raising money for a new service to help care leavers such as those in foster care.

Other shows are running all weekend - May 11-13 - and as well as ‘main stage’ events happening on the pier itself, there is an extensive fringe programme of gigs at venues around town.

Venues with gigs planned include the community centre, Cromer Social Club, North Sea Coffee Co, the North Lodge Park Tea Room, Cliftonville Hotel Ballroom, and the Albion and King’s Head pubs.

The fringe programme includes a Friday night ceilidh with top dance act Banter, a ‘world concert’ featuring the ‘Hopi’ Hopkins trio from Brittany and an acoustic music afternoon.

Other festival highlights will include the reggae sounds of Edward II and a performance of ‘rocked up’ Morris tunes from the festival’s patron Ashley Hutchings.

Concert events will also feature the acts Home Service, Gerry Colvin, Jez Lowe, Chris While and Julie Matthews.

To book tickets for the main stage events, call the pier’s box office on 01263 512495 or visit www.thecromerpier.com

Afternoon tickets are £18 while evening tickets are £22.

There are also weekend passes available for all six concerts. Fringe events all have free entry but donations are accepted.
