The Barton Turf & District Choral Society's Spring Concert (Sunday, May 3, 6.30pm) brings together the voices of Harriet Fraser (soprano), Ruth Chaumeton-Peel (mezzo) and choir, with one of the finest British string quartets -The Maggini Quartet with and double bass John Tattersill and William Falconer at the Organ.

The Barton Turf & District Choral Society's Spring Concert (Sunday, May 3, 6.30pm) brings together the voices of Harriet Fraser (soprano), Ruth Chaumeton-Peel (mezzo) and choir, with one of the finest British string quartets -The Maggini Quartet with and double bass John Tattersill and William Falconer at the Organ.

The choral society started shortly after the Second World War and continues to perform two concerts a year, usually at Barton Turf Church, with their Musical Director, Mrs Jean Peel. The annual Spring concert with The Maggini Quartet has become a regular event, which first started in 2001.

The Maggini Quartet is one of the finest British string quartets. Renowned for their championship of British repertoire, their acclaimed and ongoing contribution to Naxos' British Music Series has seen the Maggini's worldwide CD sales exceed 100,000. International awards include Gramophone Chamber Music CD of the Year, a Cannes Classical Award and a Diapason d'Or of the Year and they have been nominated twice for Grammy Awards.

The Maggini's commitment to new music has led to many important commissions, including works by James MacMillan, Robert Simpson, Eleanor Alberga and Roxanna Panufnik. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has written his ten 'Naxos Quartets' for them during a major five-year collaboration with performances and recordings generating enormous enthusiasm from audiences and critics alike. This year the Quartet have premiered works by Ronald Corp and Roxanna Panufnik and in 2009 they will be performing a new quartet by Michael Stimpson.

The Quartet appear regularly in prestigious concert series at home and abroad, and are frequent media broadcasters. Their European activities include an annual tour under the auspices of the Norwegian Chamber Music Society. They have recently performed in France, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

The Maggini Quartet are committed to educational work. They hold several UK residencies and have an international reputation as chamber music coaches.
