Cromer's 'Folk on the Pier' acoustic roots and folk rock festival celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year. The largest one of its kind in Norfolk friday 9th to 11th May will see a veritable invasion of folk and roots music both in the town and on the pier at the Pavilion Theatre.
With the main Pavilion Theatre shows sold out, the fastest ever in its history, the festival has decided to expand the fringe events in town in order to attract more weekend visitors.
From the Friday no less than 40 different performances will take place around the town ranging from sessions, skiffle, R & B, Irish, Scottish and Welsh Music, folk comedy, guitar and song writing workshops and much more.
Highlights include two gigs from top blues band the Spikedrivers, a rare concert collaboration of Celtic music from percussionist David Hopkins and flautist Jean LucThomas from Brittany and a chance to see New Orleans festival favourites Mike West & Katy Euliss in action after their Pavilion Theatre slot.
The most fascinating concert for some will be presented by musician and storyteller Tom Bliss and special guests Scold's Bridle who will perform a programme of songs and music related to the sea in the Cromer Lifeboat House on the Saturday lunch time.
This year also sees a first for the event courtesy of the Norfolk Norfolk Film Forum. Festivalgoers and the general public will have a chance to see the hilarious folk based spoof 'A Mighty Wind' about the 60's US folk movement at the Multiplex for a reduced rate of £3.50 on friday teatime. Apart from the cinema all other events are free entry throughout the town.
On Thursday 8th May there is an eve-of-festival concert which will see the launch of a new 2cd set for the Cromer Lifeboat Crew Fund. Compered by actor Geoffrey Hughes, 'Never Chance Your Luck Against the Sea' features BBC Radio 2 Award winning duo John Tams and Barry Coope, West country folk comedian Fred Wedlock, local act Hayley Moyses and the Bluegrass Forum and singer Liz Simcock. Tickets are currently available for this show.
