14 Pop Ups and Cut Outs

Learn how to use these fascinating techniques in a workshop with children's illustrator Peter Kent. We will be making a boat using cross sections to show the inner and outer layers. Suitable for children and young people over 8. Norwich based, Peter Kent has written and illustrated numerous children's books. There is an exhibition of Peter's work in Cromer Library throughout October.

COAST ENCOUNTERS

The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is bringing its outreach project 'The Culture of the Countryside' to celebrate the drama of the coast with a series of weather-related projects throughout the month of the festival involving many artists and local people.

Weather memories A collaboration throughout September and October with UEA's Weatherquest to recall the ordinary or extraordinary weather that has shaped our lives. Post your weather memories in one of our collection boxes in public museums and libraries in Cromer and Sheringham. Along with Gaia Shaw's weather diary project, they will be exhibited at our Sheringham and Cromer Beach Hut 'weather museums'. Project led by Annie Edwards and Kate Royall.

Projects funded by CUE East will take place and be exhibited at The Brick Works, Cromer Road, West Runton, at our weather stations at East and West Runton and at our special beach huts at Cromer and Sheringham.

19 East Coast Surfers

A visual documentation of the obsession surfers share with the weather. Site specific sculpture/installations over-looking the surf. Surfer stories in the pub (look out for details at the weather stations). Project led by artist Mark Haywood incorporating observations, experiences and interviews.

20 Mapping the wind

COAST GLASS

Contemporary Glass Events and Exhibition

Demonstrations, using a unique mobile hot glass unit, by international artists Scott Benefield (U.S.A.) and Andrea Spencer (UK) will take place in the Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand, from 23rd – 31st October. The Centre will be open from 10.30am – 4.00pm.

On Wednesday 27th October the artists will be giving an illustrated talk at 2pm in the Little Theatre Sheringham. There will be no demonstrations in the Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand, on that day.

Accompanying this will be an exhibition featuring the work of the resident artists Scott Benefield and Andrea Spencer as well as work by artists from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Scott's work draws on the traditional Italian techniques of glassblowing, using coloured canes to form intricate patterns in the body of the vessel. The result is a contemporary updating of the traditions of Murano glass, with sleek modern forms adorned with complex decorative details.

Andrea's glass has the material properties of transparency and fragility. The flameworking process used allows a great degree of fine detail. This process evokes both science and craft and becomes a metaphor that carries a multitude of interpretations.

The exhibition will be open from 10.30am – 4.00pm and will continue until the 12th November.

54 Living with Surrealism A conversation between Krzysztof Fijalowski and Robert Short

Both our speakers have been devotees of Surrealism since their early teens. In a free-wheeling exchange, they'll explain how they came by Surrealism and how it inflects their experience of life. Robert will recall the series of all-night surreal 'happenings' he instigated in the sixties and seventies. Krzysztof will talk about his direct involvement with current surrealist fraternities in Paris, Prague and here in the UK. They'll illustrate the discussion with several of their favorite surrealist images and maybe a slide or two of their own collages and assemblages.

59 Rob Spray and Dawn Watson - Hidden Treasures of Norfolk's Secret Sea

The underwater landscape of the North Sea is out of sight and out of mind - because of its ferocity and power many assume nothing survives under the surface but in fact a vibrant community of amazing and unfamiliar creatures occupy every niche. Rob and Dawn dive the seas around the UK and particularly Norfolk to photograph the stunning animals and environments and share the results in incredible pictures.
