Local musical talent will be showcased in a free band night at a north Norfolk arts venue this weekend.

Earlier with the Music Hut has will be taking place this Saturday between 6pm and 10pm at the Atrium, behind North Walsham High School on Spenser Avenue.

It is the first event of its kind organised by new owners of the Music Hut on Church Street, North Walsham.

Robin Woods, 36, and his partner Rebecca Shaw, from Bacton Road, North Walsham, took over the music shop business on April 1.

Mr Woods, who has grown up in the town, said: 'It is a chance to showcase local musicians and have a bit of a knees-up. There is so much waiting to happen musically in this area - that is what made me take the gamble and buy the shop.'

The gig will feature six bands and solo musicians and will range from jazz music to punk sounds.

Acts will include a 16-year-old singer called Phoenix Cushions; a three-piece rock and pop cover band called Cornered; progressive rock-pop band The Indebtors; punk/rock band Chairmen of the Bored; and rock trio King Dinosaur.

Another of the acts is Gerry Salisbury, who will perform alongside a band.

Gerry Salisbury, who now lives in Norfolk, was born in London in 1929 and worked at the London Palladium as a page-boy when he was young.

From 1959 to 1961, Gerry played bass and trumpet with Monty Sunshine and then for year played bass with Johnny Wiltshire and the Trebletones.

Through the 1960s and early 1970s Gerry worked with a number of bands including Alex Welsh, Diz Disley, Charlie Galbraith and Dick Sudhalter.

Teenagers and families can come to the event, where there will be a bar serving alcohol.

Mr Woods said he hoped to put on more musical events in the town.
