Wilton pounces to give North Walsham derby victory

North Walsham Town beat local rivals Holt 2-1 on a soft Greens Road pitch.

The Angels started the Tuesday evening encounter brightly, with first Dale Wilton and then Matty Eves seeing their shots saved.

They then broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when a Ben Moore free-kick was slotted home by Ryan Beeson.

Holt soon raised their workrate and put pressure on the Walsham defence, with stand-in keeper Chris Gray making a great one-handed save to keep the scores level before the Owls hit the Walsham bar with their next attack.

With increased pressure Holt won a corner and Lee Edwards headed home to equalise. This prompted efforts at both ends, with Wilton again having a shot saved, and Gray again denying the Holt attack with another good save.

Walsham felt they should have had a penalty just before half-time when Beeson went down in the Holt area, but the appeals were turned away.

The second half saw Walsham start brightly and Connor Kerry fired home from a free-kick, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

The game was end to end, with the pitch being a real leveller, but Walsham were the team creating the chances, with Adam Johnson heading on for AJ Johnson to shoot, before Kerry had another effort cleared.

At the other end Ben Moore came to Walsham’s rescue with a last-ditch challenge to deny Holt on the break. From the following attack, Walsham were awarded a free-kick, which Moore again took, this time for Wilton to fire home and give his side a 2-1 lead.

With the pitch now having an affect on the players, and substitutes being introduced, the game became more open and chances were created, with Wilton having a header saved, before Beeson first had a shot saved, and was then put clean through, only to round the keeper and slip at the final moment.

The game finshed 2-1 to North Walsham, and saw them get back to winning ways. Liam Clarke again played well, as did Moore in an unfamiliar role, and Gray in the Walsham goal. A special mention goes to club captain Ant Davies, who everyone at the club wishes a speedy recovery following his recent operation.
