THE North Norfolk Wheelers met at the Maltings Hotel in Weybourne for their annual presentation dinner. The meeting opened with a minute's silence and ovation to David Killingback, a long-serving member of the club who lost his fight with cancer last year.

CJ Knowles, club chairman, thanked everyone for their contribution to the club in 2008. Thanks to the dedication of the marshals, starters and back-room support who give up so much of their time the riders had enjoyed another safe and successful season.

The guest of honour, well-respected coach Bob Hayward, presented club trophies to Will Dorsett for the Best All Rounder on actual times, the Hill Climb, 18-mile Hilly Time Trial; Paul Bailey for the best 10x10 mile Time Trials on handicap; Jack Clark for the 18-mile Hill Time Trial on handicap; Nick Poulter for the Best All Rounder on handicap.

The Zac Carr Memorial Trophy for the best 10-mile time trial on handicap was retained by Dave Griffiths. He was unable to present the Clubman of the Year trophy to Keith Crane, life president, who could not attend because of ill health.

Keith received his trophy for turning up at every event - not only this season but also a great many previous seasons - to ensure that the riders were sent off safely and in line with the regulations.

Janet Killingback, David's widow, donated a new trophy for most improved rider in memory of her husband. She presented the cup to John Etheridge who has made a terrific return to form after a few years in the wilderness.

CJ closed the evening with a plea for a volunteer to co-ordinate the marshalling of the time trials. Without marshals the time trials could not take place.

The 2008 cycling season was one of the most successful of recent years, showing the increasing popularity of the sport.

The season's average participation was 12 per race - and considering the awful weather conditions on many occasions this was exceptional. The standard of racing was also exceptional with 49 personal bests and a new course record set by Will Dorsett.

Dave Griffiths achieved personal bests for four out of five of the club events - the 10, 15, 25 and 18-mile races - and Brian Platts, Nick Poulter, Jack Clark, Barry Wright, and Guy Thorold achieved personal bests in three events.

The up-coming season looks to be very competitive with both new and current riders training hard.

The club runs continue each week- starting at 11am on Wednesdays and 10.30am on Saturdays from the Anglian Waterworks, Gibbett Lane off the A148 at Pretty Corner. Riders are welcome to join the club members on any of these rides. Why not come along and give it a try?
