FOLLOWING three weeks of intense competition Cromer Tennis Club played host to the finals day of their annual club tournament.

With club coaches Gareth Goldson and Rich Keeble running the junior section of the event, the future of the club looks bright, with some great tennis played by the club's promising youngsters.

In the orange event, Adam Spruce was a deserved winner with George Richards a gallant second.

The under 14 section was won by Euan Carrier who played superbly to take the title despite still being three months short of his tenth birthday.

Carrier underlined his promise for the future with victory over the much older and more experienced Joe Morrell who battled hard against his diminutive opponent.

There was a surprise in the under 16 boys as Tom Rodwell defied his lack of tournament experience to overcome Daniel Beasy in an excellent final, whilst in the girls' event the clean-hitting Megan Broughton was just too strong for the tenacious Hannah Catling.

In the adult section, the ladies' singles winner was newcomer Lisa Lowe who beat Val Woodhouse in straight sets in a gruelling baseline tussle.

The men's title this year went to Tom Fisher, who at 13 became the youngest-ever winner of the title, defeating last year's champion Matt Broughton in a tight three-set match. With the momentum swinging one way and another, it was eventually Fisher who came out on top, with his serve and heavy top-spin groundstrokes to the fore.

The ladies' doubles was won by Val Woodhouse and Tessa Turner who narrowly defeated Heather Bottomley and Colleen Hall.

The men's doubles final was keenly contested with Derek Mackey and Matt Broughton losing out to Alex Youngman and newcomer David Young. The afternoon's tennis was completed with the mixed doubles final, Val Woodhouse partnering Derek Mackey whilst Bev Knott teamed up with Alex Youngman.

In difficult conditions, Bev and Alex proved too strong with some superb volleying from Youngman the highlight. A terrific day was concluded with presentations and a barbecue. Club thanks go to all involved for such an enjoyable end-of-season event.
