ON Saturday, Cromer Tennis Club played host to its annual club tournament finals day. With five adult finals and four junior section finals, a good crowd was treated to some fine tennis.

In the mini tennis final, Tom Spencer battled well to defeat the determined Theo de Soissons.

The 12 and under boys saw a new winner with Jack Morrell proving too strong for Edward Knight in a tense final.

In the 16 and under girl's final, Megan Broughton performed very well but Freyja Gosling-Belfield's ground strokes proved too much for the promising youngster.

The 16 and under boy's event was played to an excellent standard with Alex Youngman's integration into the men's league teams this season playing a fundamental part in his victory over Nick Hoffman.

In the adult finals, several names were appearing for the first time.

The men's section saw 17-year-old Matt Broughton eventually come through 7-6 6-7 6-4 against former winner Adam Smith, following two hours of gruelling grass court tennis.

The win was testament to Broughton's strength of character as he held three match points at 7-6 5-4 40-0 only for the redoubtable Smith to fight back.

This was Broughton's first title and could be one of many as he continues to prove one of the club's shining lights.

The ladies' final was between holder Val Woodhouse and promising junior Hannah Codling Thomas. In a final well umpired by Carol Wright, Woodhouse's experience told as she retained her title in a 6-2 6-2 win.

The ladies' doubles final saw the formidable pairing of Roma Lawrence and Anne Armitage outgun Annie Cowper Johnson and Jean Spruce in straight sets 6-2 6-1.

The men's doubles was contested by Nick Kidd and Paul Everden against Mike Holdom and Paul Roebuck, Kidd and Everden eventually emerging champions 6-3 4-6 6-4.

The mixed final was arguably the most exciting of the day with Cowper Johnson teaming up with head Groundsman Matt Jordan against Fiona Hoffman and Paul Everden.

With the increasingly vocal crowd behind the enthusiastic Jordan, he and his partner finally saw off the determined Everden and Hoffman 6-2 3-6 6-4.

A brilliant day was concluded with the presentations and a barbecue. Many thanks to all who helped make this such a special day.
