All four Seaflames teams were in action this week.

In the first division Sharks' Nigel Hayward-Surry, Keith Register and Phil Baker visited the Alpha line-up of Dennis Elliott, Ivan Hewitt and Dave Johns.

The Sharks took the first two battles in straight sets with Hayward-Surry and Register defeating Johns and Hewitt respectively. Elliott then pulled one back for the hosts and got his revenge on Baker, who he'd lost to the previous week, with a 12-10 win in the fourth.

Hayward-Surry's defence held strong as he put the visitors 3-1 up with a four-set win against Hewitt, before Johns won a five-setter against Baker.

The next three battles were all won in straight as Elliott had a more comfortable than often the case win against Register, Baker downed Hewitt and Elliott completed his maximum against Hayward-Surry to level the match at 4-4.

Johns defeated Register in four but the Sharks took the doubles in five to seal the draw.

Meanwhile Sidewinders John Paul, Martin Lawes and John Batchford hosted the Dolphins team of Scott Wallace, Steve Hudson and Steve Nicholls (playing up).

Lawes was involved in a couple of marathons, a net-cord ending his 11-9, 9-11, 14-16, 11-5, 11-9 defeat of Wallace.

Nichols also made good use of the net during his five-set win against Lawes, while Lawes' mix of play won through against Hudson in four. Batchford took a maximum, although dropping a set to both Wallace and Hudson, while Paul won his three in straight sets - although he was tested during his 11-9, 15-13, 11-7 win against Hudson, as Sidewinders won the night 9-1.

In the second division Derek Philpott and John Barron both played up from Barricudas as they joined Seal regular Mike Toye to host the Goblins team of Simeon Care and Peter and Rosie Ward.

With the exception of Barron's 11-8, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7 win against Care, all of the games were straight sets affairs.

Peter Ward made use of his agility and long reach as he took a maximum for Goblins. Rosie Ward and Care are both returning to the game and are both improving the more match-play they get and showing good blocking and consistent play. But their opponents had a few tricks too many.

Peter Ward and Care had a set-point chance to take the doubles, but a loose high serve to Toye soon put paid to that as the Seal put it away and teamed up with Barron for a 14-12, 11-7, 11-2 win that completed a 7-3 win for the Seals.

Philpott was back in action two days later when he teamed up with Nigel Pegg as a two man Barracudas team played Delta's Jamie Carter, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and League debutant Jack Morton. Philpott opened with a close 15-13 win in the fourth against Carter before Pegg won a marathon straight sets battle in Morton's first appearance 12-10, 11-7, 21-19.

Carter took the first two sets from Pegg, but the Barracuda then raced through the next two 11-1, 11-3 and took a 9-4 lead in the fifth. Carter took the next five points to level, but Pegg took the next two to close out his victory. Philpott won in three and four against Baldock-Yaxley and Morton respectively.

But with Baldock-Yaxley playing the right shots to defeat Pegg 11-7, 15-13, 11-8 and coupled with the three walkovers in the Delta's favour, the Barricudas only held a slender 5-4 lead. And the Deltas teamed up well to take the doubles in straight to close out the draw.

Players of the Week for good play are Dennis Elliott, John Batchford, Peter Ward, Jack Morton and Tom Baldock-Yaxley.
