Holt United 2, Gayton United 2

GOING into their last home match of the season, Holt knew that a point would secure them third place.

They were dealt a blow in the pre-match warm up when James Medlar picked up an injury which ruled him out of the match.

As has happened in recent matches, Holt were off the pace at the start of the game. Twice Gayton broke through but failed to trouble Justyn Goff.

It took until 20 minutes for the home side to threaten the Gayton goal when Kevin Moore was brought down on the edge of the box, but from the resulting free-kick his shot rebounded to safety off the wall.

Holt's players seemed to find it difficult to understand where they should be playing. With 35 minutes gone a great run from Matthew Sanders saw him beat three players but shoot just wide.

Soon after Holt went in front when from a Sanders' corner a visiting defender put the ball into his own net. It did not take long for the second goal to arrive, again from a Sanders' corner, this time Moore heading home past Snell in the Gayton goal.

Holt had good chances at the start of the second half to finish the game and looked much sharper than they did in the first. A great through ball from David Thompson found Colm McGilway, whose shot was blocked.

As the game entered its last quarter Gayton began to look the more likely to score and only great defending from Gavin Neale and Thompson kept them out.

But they were powerless to stop Gayton's right winger from scoring their first goal with a superb cross-shot that flew past Goff.

It was backs to the wall time as the visitors pushed more men forward. They thought they had drawn level but Jason Hawkins cleared off the line.

Simon Bush was giving the home defence a torrid time, and with time nearly up he got the equalising goal, scoring from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

Holt had one more chance to snatch the win but McGilway's lob from 25 yards just went over the bar.

A disappointing display and result, but overall the team can be well satisfied with what they have achieved this season. The team's final game is at Fakenham Reserves on Saturday.

Later in the evening the club's presentation evening will be held at Pinewood Leisure Centre.
