New setbacks for Cromer squash teams

Cromer Squash Club’s two teams picked up only six points between them in their two Norfolk League matches and, to make matters worse, both teams have slumped to the bottom of their respective divisions.
The first team were hopeful of picking up something from their local derby away to North Norfolk as captain Henri Paul had virtually a full squad available. Former club champion John Baker was unavailable so Michael Holdom came back into the team for his third match of the season while the four other team members all played in the previous week’s match against North Walsham. Their hopes came to nothing however as none of the team were able to record a victory and they returned home from Holt having gone down to a 20-2 defeat.
Holdom got off to a promising start, winning the opening game of his fifth string match 9-3 and he did have a chance to go 2-1 ahead when he served for the third game. However he narrowly lost that game 10-9 and went on to lose 3-1. Alec Burrows was up against the league secretary, Kevin Blake, and although he lost in straight games the match was much closer than the scoreline might suggest while both Ben Herrieven and Paul also lost their matches 3-0.
In the final match club champion Richard Keeble was always second best against the home team’s Simon Watson and he was well beaten 3-1.
Results: Richard Keeble lost to Simon Watson 3-9 7-9 10-8 3-9, Ben Herrieven lost to Tim Perry 4-9 6-9 5-9, Henri Paul lost to Jason Gollaglee 2-9 0-9 6-9, Alec Burrows lost to Kevin Blake 8-10 7-9 6-9, Michael Holdom lost to Devendra Mahatme 9-3 2-9 9-10 2-9.
The second team travelled to Norwich to play promotion hopefuls Wensum Lodge and thanks to the efforts of Matt Copeman at No.1 they did twice as well as the first team but were still soundly beaten 17-4.
Veterans Martin Braybrook and Malcolm Crane were both soundly beaten in the fourth and fifth string matches and although John Chandler, who was runner-up in the over 65s event at the recent Norfolk championships, won the opening game of his third string match 9-1 he was well beaten in the next three to go down to a 3-1 defeat.
Martin Sanville became the third player to lose 3-0 which left Copeman to show his colleagues how to play as he eased his way to a comfortable straight game victory.
Results: Matt Copeman beat Ian Pearson 9-4 9-1 9-4, Martin Sanville lost to Steve Cunningham 1-9 4-9 9-10, John Chandler lost to Marco Valori 9-1 0-9 5-9 6-9, Malcolm Crane lost to Graham Woodford 5-9 1-9 0-9, Martin Braybrook lost to Paul Parker 2-9 8-10 0-9.
