Wycombe boss Michael Duff saw his side beaten 2-1 by Stevenage in the dying seconds and then complained that referee Jamie O’Connor had let the match run past stoppage time.
Fourth official Greg Read had signalled four minutes of extra action as a hard-fought showdown reached 90 minutes with the teams locked at 1-1.
But the clock showed five minutes more when new Stevenage signing Josh Magennis rose to head in Phoenix Patterson’s left-wing corner to book the visitors a place in the Carabao Cup second round.
Duff said: “The game should have been stopped before the second goal. We were well past the time allotted. We also had a perfectly good goal disallowed and should have had a penalty given.
“But we should have put the game to bed in the first half. We had four or five big chances in those 45 minutes. It’s a head scratcher how we lost the game.”
Stevenage boss Alex Revell hailed striker Magennis, saying: “I’m so pleased for him that he got the winner.
“He’s a fantastic character. When you see him do things like that, he deserves a pat on the back.
“The lads who have come in are learning who we are and what we’re about, and they saw that tonight. In the second half there was spirit, resilience and that willingness to win.”
Revell’s men went ahead against the run of play with Dan Kemp’s 27th-minute shot.
Ewan Henderson levelled for Wycombe six minutes before the break before striker Magennis settled the issue.
