Husband and wife take over as captains at Mundesley Golf Club

Mundesley Golf Club will have a husband and wife team of captains at the helm this year.
David and Diana Clarke became club and ladies’ captains on New Year’s Day — hitting a ceremonial drive before a social “scramble” event.
It means a busy 2019 for the pair from Felmingham near North Walsham — organising matches and teams, and representing the club.
David, a retired chemistry teacher who is chairman of governors at Colby Primary School, plays off a handicap of 20.
Diana (28 handicap) worked in health service management, including eight years as chief executive of the North Norfolk Primary Care Trust.
Her drive-in will be the first proper swing of a club for three months, having seen the health service as customer rather than a boss. She suffered a broken arm in a fall on wet ground when playing golf in September — but says it is healing well.
The family involvement in the club doesn’t end there. Son Davey, a 26-year-old agricultural science researcher, was the first to take up the sport in 2004. He now plays off a four handicap and has represented Norfolk.
And daughter Hannah, a 25-year-old paralegal, has just taken up the game. She also does occasional shifts working in the clubhouse bar.
David and Diana are one of only a handful of husbands and wives to be captains in the same year since the club was founded in 1901.
David, who started playing when taking his son to the course, said: “It is going to be a full-on year, with commitments most days — but we are really looking forward to it.
“We like to be seen as a friendly family club which caters for all ages and abilities — so I guess our family involvement sends out a good message,” he added.
The couple’s charity for their captaincy year is the Benjamin Foundation, where Diana is a former chairman. This year’s outgoing captains Jim McQuattie and Sue Symmons raised £3,000 for Brain Tumour Research.
