Chasing Rainbows

The reliable boot of Holt’s experienced fly-half Iain Young helped to guide them to victory and enabled them to complete a league double over West Norfolk.

Young converted all four of his attempts at goal with three penalties and a conversion as Holt bounced back from successive defeats against Southwold and Ely to win at Gatehouse Lane.

The two sides were well matched and Holt did well to hold off an early onslaught from the home side, particularly when they were reduced to 14 men as a result of a deliberate knock on.

Following an incursion deep into the West Norfolk half, Young then converted a penalty to put Holt three points ahead.

West responded strongly and the Holt defence was tested for the rest of the first half. West’s fly-half Sam Moses failed to convert a penalty but soon made amends when he jinked his way over the line and converted to put West 7-3 in front.

Towards the end of the first half Holt started to play a wider game. Ollie Woodrow was stopped just short of the line and the resultant pressure led to West conceding a penalty which Young converted to make it 7-6 at half-time.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Young converted his third penalty to put Holt ahead 7-9 and West suffered a further blow when their playmaker Moses had to go off with a leg injury.

Mainly due to injuries, both sides made use of their replacements which enabled Holt’s youngster Toby Renwick to make his first team debut.

Both defences were seemingly watertight and it took a clever chip over the advancing West defence to break the deadlock. Bruce van Poortvliet won the race for the ball and put away Aaron Tagg who showed his pace to score under the posts with Young converting to increase Holt’s lead to 7-16.

During the last quarter of the game both sides showed their fitness and worked tirelessly but both defences held firm.

The Woodfordes man of the match for Holt was prop forward Aaron Cole who was in the thick of the action for the whole game.

Elsewhere, Thetford got back to winning ways after a difficult run against the top teams when they beat visitors Newmarket 57-22 while Wisbech went down 62-7 at Ely.
