One north Norfolk team not complaining about the weekend weather was Holt United.

Their bid for promotion left them top of the table in Anglian Combination Division One after a vital odd goal of three victory at St Andrews.

Thomas Graver and David Thompson were the marksmen who did the damage but that wise old owl, manager Jim Blandford, is urging extreme caution with four more games to come.

“Quite simply, I'm not prepared to go over the top about our current position. We shall take each game as it comes and hope for a top-two finish.

“The Premier Division is losing a team, maybe two, but if past decisions on this issue are any guide it seems probable that only two teams will be going up from Division One,” he reasoned.

While it makes more sense to relegate weak teams and promote quality this can only happen if the management committee recommends this action and a vote then taken at the annual meeting to approve.

“We have to forget about our league table position and get out there and play the game. I'm really proud of my lads - for some of them this is a new experience.

“All of them have performed extremely well and I don't want any of them to have any regrets at the end,” insisted the manager.

The present position in the promotion race is this. Holt have won 55 points from 26 games and their remaining four fixtures are Wymondham away on Saturday, St Andrews at home under lights on April 9, at home to Gayton on April 19 and finally a visit to Fakenham Reserves on May 3.

Loddon have 52 points from 23 games and remain title favourites, and from the Owls' viewpoint the probable champions may hold the key for unlocking Holt's promotion door for they have a vital game at Watton who, with 50 points from 24 games, represent the only real threat to the promotion hopes at Kelling Road.

As Blandford observes, this is no time for Holt to start counting chickens while the eggs are still under incubation.

In the Premier Division all the important games were abandoned while in Division Two Aylsham Wanderers went down 4-2 at Downham Reserves and now require maximum points from their remaining four games to have any chance of escaping relegation.

Monday night's Mummery Cup final between Hempnall and Watton was snowed off.

On Saturday, Cromer Town need three points from Sprowston Athletic to maintain their Sterry Cup challenge, North Walsham entertain Mattishall and Sheringham are at home to Dersingham. League leaders Wroxham Reserves have no game at present.

In Division One Stalham Town entertain Loddon, Aylsham are at home to Corton in Division Two and Reepham host Wortwell.

In Division Six Hoveton Wherrymen visit Holt Reserves where a victory will virtually guarantee them promotion.
