THIS was new manager Andy Baker's first league game in charge and it was won by a deflected shot in the first half.

With regular first team players unavailable, Baker brought in members of the more promising reserve team squad including keeper Phil Smith, defender Wines, mid-fielder Taylor and substitutes Goff, McCabe and D Cook.

Wroxham attacked from the start. Key teed up a free-kick 24 yards out, but his low left-footer was blocked and cleared. At the other end Bethell got his attack going but, faced with Wroxham's first- choice centre-backs, Challen and Carus, the forward motion petered out.

Challen went up for a free-kick on the right but his powerful header flashed a yard wide. Wroxham then were pinned in their own penalty area for several minutes but broke, only for Harris to repossess the ball and surge forward to lose control on the edge of the box.

Wroxham broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Again Key was the player to unlock the home defence but, instead of attempting to score himself from a narrow angle, he squared the ball back and Gary Gilmore struck the ball sweetly. It appeared to be flashing wide until it was deflected past keeper Munson by a defender's leg.

A fracas developed on the edge of the Yachtsmen's penalty area with keeper Smith going down in the melée. Harwich's Matt Stace was shown a yellow card before Wroxham took their free-kick

With Gavin Pauling returning from Diss to fill his usual right-back position Danny Self was pushed up to a holding midfield position where he proved vital in breaking up the home attacks.

It was this midfield supremacy that kept Wroxham on the attack but crosses went begging as they skidded across the face of goal.

The Wroxham manager made a substitution, bringing on Goff for

Taylor with a clear intention of securing a more comfortable cushion than the

one goal.

The game petered out into a nondescript confrontation although Wroxham striker Cook headed against the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.

At the other end Smith saved point-blank from Bethell and the last action of the game was a Gilmore blockbuster that was clutched by the keeper seconds before the final whistle.

Wroxham: Smith, Pauling, Wines, Challen, Carus, Taylor, Self, Lemmon, Cook, Key, Gilmore. Subs: Goff, Muddel, McAbe, McAnnally.

On Saturday the Yachtsmen entertain Norwich United (ko 3pm).
