North Walsham Town Sunday entertained last season's double winners Marlborough in the 2nd Round of the Sunday Senior Cup and dethroned the kings of Norfolk football as a thrilling comeback resulted in a 5-3 victory.

Town started brightly and were ahead within 2 minutes. Tindall's free-kick was flicked on by McGilway for Skipper to latch onto. He then sidestepped his marker and provided an inch-perfect delivery to allow Wilton to steal in at the far post and cushion his volley into the net.

This seemed to stir the giant into action and the away side took control of proceedings with an effervescent brand of passing football. The equaliser arrived on 10mins when a low cross ricocheted off Turner and fell invitingly for Jody Cork to divert past Dyke.

Town were now on the ropes as their positive start seemed to have evaporated and by the half hour they found themselves 3-1 down. Both goals came courtesy of Ben Welham, the first a low drive from an acute angle and the second was a vicious dipping volley from 20yds which left the Town faithful speechless. As the game seemed to be slipping from Town's grasp, they were thankful for the intervention of an upright as Armes' low shot rocked the base of the post and rebounded to safety.

With Crosby struggling with a knock, Davison was introduced and he soon set about stamping his authority on the centre of midfield and alongside Scannell, Town regained a foothold. On 40mins, they reduced the arrears. As Hinton twisted and turned in the area, referee Gosling deemed the challenge on him to be illegal and pointed to the spot. Dale Wilton stepped up and coolly converted the penalty despite the best efforts of the Marlborough keeper.

Moments later, Hinton was forced off the field following a stern challenge and Ellis replaced him. When the action recommenced, Marlborough again fought back and Dyke had to be at his best to claw three shots away and, as the half came to end, two free-kicks on the edge of the Town area came to nothing to leave the game finely poised at the interval.

What transpired in the 2nd half was astonishing as the first half action paled into insignificance. Every member of the squad upped their performance and another bright start saw the 6th goal of the game arrive. Charlie Skipper broke the offside trap as he latched onto a through-ball and finished with aplomb.

The game then became end-to-end with both sides throwing everything into gaining the all-important 7th goal. With Town's backline of Tindall, Robertson, Turner and Barker building a wall in front of their keeper and on the few occasions they were breached, Dyke was on hand to mop up any dangerous situation.

At the other end, Town were becoming more and more potent as they sensed a giant killing and the interplay between Wilton, Hinton, Skipper and McGilway was a joy to behold. On 64mins, Town scored their 4th and again it came from the spot. McGilway beat his man as he raced clear before being crudely chopped down as he prepared to shoot with only the keeper to beat. Strangely, the offending defender was not reprimanded for his actions but this didn't deter Wilton who again found the bottom corner from 12yds to complete his hat-trick.

On 75mins, Town wasted a great chance to increase their lead when Skipper again broke the offside trap but took the wrong option as he tried to tee up Hinton. Marlborough immediately broke as an attack sliced through the Town defence but Cork's chip dropped agonisingly wide.

As nerves increased, Marlborough sensed an equaliser and Walsham survived a number of close scares as corner kicks seemed to cause consternation in the area.

Victory was confirmed in injury time as McGilway was released by Turner and again beat his man before finding Skipper in the area. The Town number 9 hesitated in possession but managed to regain his composure before being upended with Town being awarded their 3rd spot-kick of the encounter. Wilton again showed nerves of steel to send the keeper the wrong way.

Minutes later came the final shrill of referee Gosling's whistle and with it, the dragon was slain. This result sends Town into the last 16 of Norfolk's premier Sunday competition, but next week it is back to the bread 'n butter of league action as Walsham make the long trip to Aslacton & Great Moulton. After a stuttering start to the season the squad, despite missing Cini, Davis, Drake, Marsh, Miller, the Payne brothers and Danny Skipper, proved what can be achieved with this all-action display.
