Cromer Town gained their first victory in nearly two years on Saturday when the won 2-1 at Attleborough Town in the First Division of the Anglian Combination.

The Crabs, who last tasted success in the league in March 2016 against Norwich CEYMS, produced the shock of the day as goals from Jack Crane and Julio Pinto gave them all three points.

Cromer took just one point over the course of the 2016-17 season as they dropped out of the top flight and had lost all 14 games this term at a lower level before finally having something to smile about at the weekend.

New manager Bafade Carvalho, who took over from Jordan Kemp just before Christmas, had guided his side to a battling 1-0 defeat against Kirkley and Pakefield Reserves in his first game in charge before a 10-0 defeat at leaders Mundford provided a swift reality check - but it all came together at Attleborough Recreation Ground following the disappointment of conceding first.

Crane marked his first game since his return to the club from Sheringham with an equaliser and Pinto popped up with a second five minutes from time to prompt some memorable celebrations at the end.

'It was a great moment for everyone connected with Cromer Town,' said chairman Jenna Bedwell, who took up the role during the summer at a time when the club's very existence was under threat. 'The players did the right thing and made sure they shook hands with their opponents but then the celebrations could get under way!

'Bafode has done an excellent job since he has come in - he has played at a decent level in Portugal but he never goes on about that, he is just focused on the team.

'He has used his contacts to bring some new players in and now they have got that win under their belts it gives us all something to build on. I looked at the table afterwards and we are now only four points behind Loddon, so let's hope we can now start moving in the right direction. If we go down, so be it - but that's not the way we are thinking. It would be nice to stay in Division One.

'The main thing is that the long run without a win is now over - and hopefully that will attract some more local players to get involved.'

Bedwell admitted there was a sense of relief as well as delight when the final whistle sounded at Attleborough on Saturday afternoon.

'Obviously it has been a tough time - but then we knew it would be a challenge when we took over in the summer,' she said. 'I guess the low point was when we started with just 10 men against North Walsham and then two of the players decided to leave at half-time. We played on with eight and were beaten 10-0.

'It's not what you want to see but we kept going, which was the most important thing.'

Cromer will be looking to build on their memorable win on Saturday when they hit the road again to take on Bungay Town (2.30pm).
