In the yo-yo world of Division Four of the Norfolk SRA Squash Leagues Cromer II moved back to the top of the table.

They narrowly beat the overnight leaders, Diss 14-11, to take their points total for the season to 177 from 11 matches, one more than their South Norfolk rivals, with both teams having four matches left to play.

Captain Barry Starling made just one change from the team who won their previous match at Lenwade, deciding that his form didn't warrant a regular place in the team as he gave a first start of the season to Matt Copeman who played the second string match.

With Diss having an excellent player at number one and Copeman understandably match rusty the captain knew that to have any realistic chance of winning the team had to win the three matches at the bottom of the order but things did not look too promising when Martin Braybrook turned up to play the fifth string match, against a player to whom he lost 3-0 earlier in the season, suffering from a heavy cold.

He won the opening game but when he trailed 2-8 in the second it looked as though he was heading for defeat. Somehow he made a remarkable recovery to take the game 10-9 but despite heavy doses of decongestants lost the next two games as his opponent drew level.

However, in an amazing fifth game Braybrook recovered the initiative and despite tiredness taking its toll he discovered hidden reserves of energy to take the game 9-2 and the match 3-2.

At number four young Alex Foster continued his run of good form as he won his seventh successive match, coming out on top 3-1 and then in a closely contested third string match Ben Herrieven recorded his 10th victory of what is becoming a highly successful season as he once again had the large and appreciative band of spectators on tenterhooks as he won 3-2 to ensure the Cromer team would notch up their ninth win of the season.

Both Copeman and Henri Paul, who was playing at number one went down to straight game defeats which gave Cromer II a narrow three point victory, a victory which put them back on top of the table.

A delighted Starling said afterwards: “I made the right decision to leave myself out as I didn't think my recent form justified my place in the team. Braybrook was far from well but he was truly tremendous and his victory set us up well for what was an excellent team victory.”

Results: Henri Paul lost to Tom Bobbins 4-9, 0-9, 7-9; Matt Copeman lost to Nigel Thompson 2-9, 2-9, 6-9; Ben Herrieven beat Trend Binks 6-9, 9-3, 9-4, 4-9, 9-5; Alex Foster beat Richard Cole 9-5, 6-9, 9-7, 9-5; Martin Braybrook beat Ian Barker 9-5, 10-9, 4-9, 5-9, 9-2.
