Beach Runners shine in Edingthorpe race

PUBLISHED: 18:08 12 June 2012

Nearly a hundred runners took to the Norfolk lanes for the Edingthorpe Five Mile race on Jubilee weekend with no less than 14 North Norfolk Beach Runners supporting their fellow club member, race organiser Paul Cockady.

First Beach Runner across the line was John Christopher who finished 11th in a quick time of 30:55 for the slightly over-distance course and Tony Witmond continued his steady improvement with a 15th place finish in 32:19.

They were closely followed by Darren Armstrong and John Leach and another fast improving Beach Runner, Eddie Carman, who ran an excellent 34:20 after something of a lay-off from race running.

Lucy Collyer and Ellen Similon were the first two lady members home in 40th and 46th places respectively, separated by the amazingly consistent Terrry Quigley who finished first over 60 with a time of 36:29.

Another age group winner was the in-form Andi Osborne who has become a consistent prize winner this year, crossing the line in an excellent time of 38:34 for 34th place.

Other members of the Cromer club enjoying the friendly atmosphere were Shelley Burton, Rob Osborne, Andi Toogood, Emma Culley and Mike Marshall, all helping to make the race a success for the Edingthorpe Church fund-raising efforts.

A week later the Norfolk race circuit moved to Wymondham for the Midsummer 10 Mile race. Although only four North Norfolk Beach Runners were on the start line, two came away with age group prizes. The stand-out performance came from Paul Muffett who is now right back to his best form after a disappointing winter. Paul finished a superb fourth overall in 1:02:39 to win the 50-54 category by some considerable distance.

Such was Paul’s dominance that the next Beach Runner across the line, Richard Blake, was more than 10 minutes back. Richard is a regular winner of the Over 60s but on this occasion found himself relegated to third place.

Andi Osborne picked up her second age group first in a week with an excellent run for 77th overall in a time of 1:21:56 and Mike Marshall made up the quartet of Beach Runners enjoying the sunny morning with a finish time of 1:42:22.
