Ninety youth football teams headed to North Norfolk for a major tournament at the weekend - with youngsters also doing some of the refereeing.

The annual Cromer Youth tournament was held at the Madra ground in Knapton as the club continues its quest for a base in its home town.

Fifty teams attended on the Saturday and 40 on Sunday from under-7 to under-15s, and including under-11 girls.

They came from as afar afield as King's Lynn, Hemsby and Norwich. The under 7s and 8s played non-competitive games, while the rest worked their way through qualifying leagues through to finals.

Club vice-chairman Barry Foulser said it was a fantastic weekend of football, which was also a major money-raiser for the club - generating about 2,000, through entry fees, a raffle and programme advertising towards running costs such as pitch hire.

'We also had nine youth referees after seeing a press story about Y10 pupils at Reepham high passing their refereeing examinations. We invited them along and it was great experience for them too.'

On the Sunday prizes were presented by MP Norman Lamb and Cromer county councillor Hilary Thompson.
