Kevin Webb's dream of leading Norfolk to Anglian League glory in his final season as captain was dashed on Sunday following a below par display from his team.

The spirit in the camp could hardly have been higher as Norfolk went into their penultimate fixture at Royal Cromer, with a superb 9-3 success at Leicestershire & Rutland last month having catapulted them to the top of the table.

But smiles were in short supply at the end of the day, with opponents Lincolnshire leaving with a 7½-4½ success that almost certainly ruled out the chance a happy ending for the popular skipper.

'I felt really, really disappointed at the end - in fact I am still feeling bad about it now,' said Webb as he reflected on a painful defeat the following day. 'It was a disappointing performance overall.

'The target now is to win the final game against Cambridgeshire - but even if we win convincingly we would need some heavy defeats for our rivals to stand any chance of finishing top, and that isn't going to happen.'

Norfolk left themselves with a mountain to climb on Sunday after failing to win any of the morning foursomes. Halves for Jack Yule and Giles Evans and Simon Clark and Thomas Nudd prevented a whitewash, but defeats for Richard Wilson and James Flesher and Warren Bates and Tom Beasley put the hosts firmly on the back foot at 3-1 down.

It was a similar story of frustration for Webb in the singles, with the game all but up as lead-out man Yule went down 2&1 and Evans, the player who followed him, losing 5&3.

There were a couple of victories to cheer from each end of the age scale, with young Bates winning 1 up and the experienced Clark 3&2, while Wilson came in with a half. But defeats for Flescher (3&2) and Nudd (1 down) sealed Norfolk's fate.
