Towards the end of the last century a league game between the Yachtsmen and the Fenmen attracted a record league gate of nearly 1,200 fans.

By contrast, hardly more than 100 came through the gate to watch this confrontation - and the stayaways missed nothing, writes Roy Webster.

Throughout the first 45 minutes, which remained goalless, Wroxham had the better of the play and had numerous chances to go ahead.

But every one of Andy Key's crosses went begging. And then when a splendid move between Self and Gilmore set Cook free, he did well enough to make himself space with a neat swivel - only to pull his right-footer inches past the post.

The visitors' best chances may be summed up by the fact that home keeper McAnally had just three touches of the ball, and those either from over-hit long balls or the odd back pass.

The Yachtsmen were expected to come out on a more positive note for three points at this stage of the season which were reckoned to be essential to keep the Norfolk Senior Cup holders in the top half of the Ridgeons Premier table.

Wroxham's extravagance in front of goal proved costly, for eight minutes into the second half they went behind.

In a scramble in the home goalmouth Stuart Cobb rammed the ball past McAnally.

The visitors were now playing with more style and endeavour, and Thompson met a cross from the left with a fierce header pushed out for a corner by the keeper.

At the other end Wroxham seemed likely to level the score when Hilton met a flag-kick from the right, but again it was the keeper gaining the limelight, diving full-stretch to keep the ball out.

Wroxham substitutions brought their reward when Notman took a free-kick just outside the penalty box. The ball rebounded off a defender's leg and fell to Gavin Crane, who made no mistake from close range.

Wroxham played three at the back, pushing players up for the equaliser.

Unfortunately, the Fenmen defended in depth and hacked the ball off the line twice, leaving Wroxham with just a point from this game, when they needed all three to have any chance of rising to important parts of the table.
