A gifted 10-year-old from Thorpe St Andrew has won the instrumental section of a music contest.

Colette Maxwell-Preston, from Hillside Avenue Primary School in Norwich, won the district final of a Rotary Young Musician Competition 2018, which was held at the Fishmongers' Recital Hall at Gresham's in Holt.

The event was hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Holt and Broadland.

John Rampling, organiser, said: 'The audience of around 120 was wonderfully entertained with wide range of music. The 12 aspiring young musicians from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire did justice to the magnificent state of the art recital hall which is part of the £6.5m Britten Building music complex'.

Gwilym Howarth, 11, from Uggeshall, was runner-up in the instrumental section. Thurlton 11-year-old Rosie Ashdown-Nichol won a 'voice' section, and runner up was Emily Ringwood, 16 from Sacred Heart School, Swaffham.

The winners will proceed to a regional final in April at Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire and possibly to a national final in Edinburgh in May.

Adjudicators, Stephen Miles, Alison Cox and Jane Roberson also highly commended drummer Calypso de Volkovitch, aged nine.

Rotary district governor Robert Lovick and district youth service chairman Bill Redmayne reminded the gathering of other Rotary competitions which encourage young people to show their talents, including public speaking, writing, photography, technology and cooking.
