MANGLED remains of a crashed car are to go on display in North Walsham's Vicarage Road car park in a hard-hitting bid to educate young drivers about the risks on rural roads.

The wrecked metallic-pink Fiesta XR2, with a distinctive Playboy logo, will be put on show for about a fortnight as soon as car-park owners North Norfolk District Council have found railings to place around it, according to police Sergeant Kersty Brooks.

It belongs to 18-year-old Gemma Vincent who was at the wheel when it left the road, hit trees and overturned at Captain's Pond, Westwick, on December 16.

Paramedics told Miss Vincent and her passenger Tom Ralph, 21, that they were lucky to have survived the crash. She has given her permission for the car to be displayed. At the time of the accident she warned other inexperienced drivers to take great care on the roads.

Young people congregating in the car park have prompted complaints from nearby residents who say they use it, and nearby roads, as a race track. They have aired their views and expressed fears about public safety at meetings of North Walsham's Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

Posters will go up around the wreck listing rural accident statistics, said Sgt Brooks, a member of the team.

Miss Vincent's accident came at the end of a tragic year for north Norfolk youngsters on local roads.

Teenagers Christopher Hayden and Nathan Wharton, friends of Miss Vincent, were killed last September when their car was in collision with a coach on the B1150 at Crostwick.

And chefs Daniel Bayle, 20, and Warren Tyrrell, 19, were killed in separate car crashes at Northrepps and Sheringham in November.
