Mary Poppins, Denis the Menace and Percy the Park Keeper were just some of the characters turning up for lessons at the Belfry Primary School, Overstrand, which celebrated World Book Day with activities ranging from reading sessions, to a book swap.

Youngsters, who came to school dressed as their favourite storybook characters, were also invited to bring their own books to school, which they shared with their teachers and classmates.

At a special World Book Day assembly, the school was presented with 15 new books by Morrison’s Cromer community champion Simon Clipsom as part of a scheme run by the supermarket giant in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

Key Stage 2 teacher and literacy co-ordinator Jodie Watkins said: “We feel it is really important to encourage children who might not get access to books at home and World Book Day is a nice way to engage them with that imaginary world.”
