An event to recruit volunteer workers and supporters for the new Maltings arts, heritage and community hub has been planned for May 2.
The £5m centre which will open in Wells this summer is in particular need of volunteers to help at the box office and tourist information centre.
Simon Daykin, director, said the event, running from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, followed a similar one in April.
Mr Daykin said: “Wells Maltings is going to be a very active operation and so we need as many as we can support. We will be putting on a year-round programme of film, drama, music, art, heritage, comedy, family activities and so on, with a soft opening planned for this summer and then our launch programme proper from the beginning of September.
“As a not-for-profit organisation, we will rely on the support of dedicated volunteers to keep this busy community venue going and so we’re currently seeking volunteers in all areas. Everyone is welcome, whether they can simply spare a few hours every now and then to wield a paintbrush or do some gardening, for example, in order to keep the venue looking its best, or they’re able to commit to regular shifts in the café or bar.”
Visitors to the event at the Sackhouse on Staithe Street will have the chance to find out more about the voluntary positions available and how to get involved.
Mr Daykin added: “We are also looking for volunteers to assist with our outreach programme, which will bring activities at Wells Maltings into the wider community; events such as outdoor painting sessions or children’s arts and crafts classes.”
Mr Daykin said he hoped the new facility would become a true hub for the community, and volunteers were essential to making that happen.
He said: “Our vision at Wells Maltings is to connect everyone with the very best in arts and culture, with their local heritage and with each other.
“We aim to establish and sustain the Maltings as a thriving, welcoming and vibrant hub of cultural and community activity, where people come together to enjoy, create and participate.
“Volunteering is a fundamental part of what we do and our volunteers are incredibly important to us. It’s essential that we use and develop people’s skills and make volunteer experiences with us enjoyable and rewarding.”
