Victorian day in North Walsham
A north Norfolk school has turned back the clock and held a Victorian themed day.
As part of their history curriculum work, the year one and two classes at North Walsham Infant School turned back the clock by 140 years.
The school opened in 1874 and staff decided to give children the full experience of a day in a Victorian-era school so they could really understand what life was like back then for a child.
After several weeks of special lessons in which pupils learnt about the houses, jobs food and clothing of families in days past, children came dressed for the part of a Victorian child and experienced a day of schooling in bare rooms, with slates instead of books and lessons in arithmetic. Local historian Neil Storey provided many ideas for the day, which started with an assembly in which they pupils and staff sang the national anthem.
A spokesman for the school said; 'The children had a great day, learnt lots about history and life in a bygone time and they went home buzzing with excitement at the experience they'd had.'
