Turnaround: North Walsham care home rated good after being placed in special measures last year
Staff at a care home are celebrating after a remarkable turnaround in which it has gone from being placed in special measures last year to being rated good in its latest Care Quality Commission report.
Walsham Grange in North Walsham was taken out of special measures earlier this year and has now sufficiently improved to be given a good overall rating.
However, the home, which cares for up to 75 people, some with dementia, still needs to show that it is a consistently well-led service, after being deemed to require improvement in that category.
Manager Dawn Laffey said: “We have worked very hard as a team to achieve that good grading. It’s nice that our work has been recognised. I think it was recognised initially by the residents, and confirmed by the CQC.”
Michael Christophi, who owns the care home, thanked the team in Bacton Road, and said: “It’s so pleasing their hard work and commitment has been reflected in the CQC report and especially the comments form residents and their families.
“There is a great team spirit at Walsham Grange - we really do care passionately about our residents.”
The unannounced CQC inspection was carried out on November 7.
The report stated: “At our last comprehensive inspection in March we found the service was not meeting the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (regulated activities) Regulations 2014.
“This was because people’s nutritional and hydration needs were not met and individual risks were not identified, managed or mitigated. We also found that topical medicines were not administered as prescribed.
“During this inspection the service demonstrated to us that improvements have been made and it is no longer in breach of this regulation.”
“People we spoke to felt safe and their relatives felt that staff cared for them in a safe way.”
The report includes a comment from a relative of a resident, who said: “I think the staff are really good, they’re so nice here.”
The report is in stark contrast to a year ago, when the home was criticised by the CQC, after it recorded more than 30 accidents and incidents involving residents in a single month.
