Last year, the Red Arrows were the star attraction during the Carnival week festivities in Cromer.

Fears were raised that the annual aerobatic display may be under-threat following the controversial decision to scrap this year's Great Yarmouth Air Show, based on a decision to install bollards to step terrorist atrocities such as the horrific Nice attack.

However, organisers have this week moved quickly to reassure visitors the show will go on.

Tony Shipp, chairman of Cromer Carnival committee, said they expected to hear in early March whether their application to have the RAF's crack Red Arrows display team back for this year's carnival day, August 16, had been successful.

If it was, he was hopeful the event would go ahead. The East Anglian-based Wildcats aerobatics squad had already confirmed its attendance on August 15.

Mr Shipp said the aftermath of the Shoreham Airshow crash in August 2015 had meant 'a lot of extra paperwork' for Cromer Carnival organisers last year to meet more stringent conditions.

But this had been successfully completed and he was not aware of any added rules or costs, apart from a requirement from this year to have a Civil Aviation Authority-approved Flight Display Director present during the Wilcats' performance. This would add 'a few hundred pounds' to the price.

The overall cost, including insurance, of the Red Arrows, was between £11,000 and £11,500, according to Mr Shipp.

'We are not an airshow,' he added. 'These displays are just part of a big programme of events in carnival week. We feel the Red Arrows are worth it because they bring so many people to the town.'
