The debate over having a supermarket in Sheringham was the subject of a heated discussion on BBC Radio 2 this afternoon - before the planning decision.

Jono Read who runs a Facebook group supporting the Tesco plans, was one of those speaking during the Jeremy Vine show, which was presented by Anita Rani, which asked people whether they would want a Tesco in their town.

He said: 'Tesco have gone away and looked at the design of their plans and come back with something which everyone will want. 'The planning inspector has already said it is the best planning design he has seen yet.

'At the moment the nearest supermarket to Sheringham is three miles away in Cromer. The argument is that a store in the town will pull people back into Sheringham rather than going out of town for their shopping, there is an adequate need for a supermarket in the town.'

One of those against having a Tesco in the town and speaking on the show was Terence Blacker, a journalist and critic who regularly writes in The Independent and lives in the county.

He said: 'There is no doubt that this kills off local retailers. I do not buy the argument that having a Tesco creates more jobs, all there is, is one hit of jobs when it first opens, you do not see all the jobs which are lost.

'There is a choice between having efficiency and ease on one hand and keeping the life of a town.'
