Take a trip down memory lane with our fabulous photographic celebration of East Anglian life through the decades. Today we take a nostalgic look back at Cromer, a lovely seaside town perched on the very edge of the North Norfolk coast.
Life in Cromer has revolved around the sea for centuries, whether in its Victorian heyday as a popular holiday resort or as a major crabbing and fishing fleet.
A pier has stood on the site since the 14th century, taking many different forms over the years. The current pier has come to symbolise the town and has stood since 1901, surviving many devastating storms and severe damage over the years.
Maintenance and building work on its structure has never been easy and always relies on a long wait for fine weather and calm seas. In 1955, these divers prepared to have their heavy helmets clamped in place before taking advantage of the good conditions to work underwater on the piles below the pier.
The famaous Pavillion, standing proudly at the end, has changed somewhat over the years, but the pier has hosted concerts and shows for decades. The now famous Seaside Specials didn't begin until 1978 - but are now a staple part of the town's culture.
