A little yellow car from Norfolk will tackle a 7,000 mile journey across mountains and desert this summer to raise funds for African charities.

Inside will be two students combining an adventure with helping good causes.

Would-be architect Simon Gomm, engineer and farmer Tom Rae, and their 970cc Suzuki Santana “jeep” are all 23 years old.

But while the men are still “running in” to their chosen careers, the car, which cost them £600, has 79,000 miles on the clock.

In July it will cross some of the toughest terrain in the world, as its heads on a five-week trek from London to Cameroon on the west coast of Africa.

Simon, from Gresham near Cromer, said they hoped to raise far more than the minimum £1,000 for their chosen causes - Send A Cow, which supports African families through giving them livestock, and Cameroon Wildlife Aid, which promotes conservation through trying to stop deforestation and the killing of bushmeat animals such as monkeys.

Simon is midway through an architecture degree at Nottingham University and on a placement with Norwich firm Feilden and Mawson. Farmer's son Tom, from Roydon near King's Lynn, is at Durham studying engineering.

The first ever Adventurists Rally to Africa will see 75 cars leave London's Hyde Park on July 18, seeking to raise a total of £100,000.

Anyone wanting to support Simon and Tom's team, called Tally Ho, can do it through the website http://africarally.theadventurists.com/tallyho
