Students from a North Norfolk school have come top of the class in a spelling competition.

Stalham High School has won the local heat of the 2011 Times Spelling Bee - the UK's national spelling competition for schools.

More than 1,000 schools from across the UK have entered a team for the competition and Stalham High School have won their local heat which took place at Norwich Playhouse on March 23. The team competed against seven teams from local schools.

The Stalham High School team consisted of three players, Matilda Bailes, 11, Ellie Horne, 11, and Rosie Barne, 12, with James Chapman, 11, as a reserve.

Julia Lester, a teacher from Stalham High School said: 'We're really excited. I think they've done exceptionally well.'

In second place was Caister High School with Reepham High School coming third.

The students will now go forward to The Times Spelling Bee Semi-Finals in May.

The 11 winning teams from the semi-finals will then travel to London to compete in the grand final in the O2 Arena on Thursday, June 23.
