One of north Norfolk’s favourite community shops is due to undergo a transformation which aims to bring low supermarket prices into the heart of the community.

The Suffield Post Office, otherwise known as The Spar in Mill Road, has been a firm favourite with Cromer locals for almost a decade.

But since undergoing a huge building project to add 400 square feet to the shop floor, owner Andy Mills has decided he could partner with a new brand to bring more big-name benefits to Suffield Park.

The shop will close on June 4 until June 8, when it will reopen as a One Stop, a brand owned by Tesco.

Mr Mills, 51, said: “I’ve been living in the community and running this post office for seven years now. It’s a community shop and it’s still independently owned and run by me with the same great staff and service.

“But when we did this extention we sort of outgrew Spar who do smaller shops. I did a survey of 100 products from One Stop and the same products of our own, and 97% of One Stop prices were cheaper.”

Mr Mills, who previously worked in IT, continued: “I wanted to bring supermarket prices to the local community that maybe can’t get to one of the bigger supermarkets, and even when they do don’t want to have to carry all their shopping back.
“I was looking at prices like £1 for four pints of milk, and £1 for a large load of bread, and we can only do that when we have it on promotion. I don’t want people to feel like they’re missing out on a supermarket price because they can’t get there.”

The new store will have a complete refit, and an official opening will be held on June 16.

The opening is being preceded by a colouring competition for local children between the ages of 0 and 12, the winner of which will cut the ribbon of the new store along with Captain Jack Sparrow.

The child will also have their name put on a plaque, which will hang inside the new store.

To enter the competition, pick up a stencil from the shop and return it by June 8.
