More than six decades have passed since the days they put on their uniforms, packed their bags and trundled off to class together at North Walsham High School for Girls.

But a group of 16 women still hold happy memories from that time, and regularly meet to catch up and reminisce about times gone by.

The latest reunion of the 'class of 1947' at North Walsham's Catholic church hall was hailed as a success by organiser, Joan Matthews.

Mrs Matthews, from East Runton, said: "We all really appreciated our education in those days. We hope to have another reunion next year, but who knows what's around the corner?"

Former classmate Avril Smithson said: "We've all survived to such a great age, and I think it's because we had that great start in life which a lot of people don't have today."

Another former pupil, Thelma Lloyd, said she remembered the day when King George VI died in 1952. She said: "The whole school was in tears."
