You would think that a little musical accompaniment at a car boot sale would go down well. But one singer/guitarist has been banned from performing at several sites following complaints.

Ali Batts, who will be 60 in September and sings as Ali Bee, cannot sing anymore at three car boot sites in north Norfolk.

It followed complaints from one woman who said that she wanted a little peace and quiet at the event.

Miss Batts, who lives with her partner Andy Marshall in Surrey Street, Cromer, said she could not believe it.

She said: “i don’t ask for any money and if I do get donations, I give it to charities.

“I like singing and I generally get good feedback from people at car boot sales. This particular woman said she came to get some peace and quiet. She also implied I was not a very good singer.

“She came over to my partner at Overstrand while I was in the toilet. She told him that I should be quiet.

“She then went over to other stalls and told them to complain as well.

“These car boot sales are run by the same people, so I’ve ended up being banned from the East Runton Saturday football pitch site, and Beeston, as well.

“But I can still play at Mundesley and Sal’s car boot at East Runton.”

She said she was angry about the ban which had also hit her confidence.

She added: “But it’s not going to stop me singing at the car boot sales where I can still play. It has made me more determined to carry on.”

Miss Batts sings mostly Irish and ‘60s/’70s folk songs and returned to performing after a break, hoping that any positive feedback would help her get more gigs at old people’s homes, where she has performed before.

She has two grown-up daughters and her partner and herself have seven grandchildren between them.
