Sheringham Women’s Institute members are appealing to nimble-fingered local folk to help create of poppy installation as part of the town’s First World War centenary celebrations.

The group has come up with the idea of creating a piece of artwork made from hundreds of stitched, knitted and crocheted red poppies, with the finished piece going on show at various town locations.

WI president Liz Withington said the installation would reflect Sheringham’s fishing heritage, and be a tribute to those who lost their lives.

She added: “The WI wants to show how important it is for us as a whole community to remember the men and boys of Sheringham who left to fight for freedom and never returned.”

Any finished poppies can be left at Sheringham community centre or at the town hall. The WI will also be hosting a community ‘make’ session with tea and biscuits at the Lighthouse Church on October 15 from 2pm-5pm. The event is open to all ages, for more information, visit Sheringham WI Facebook page.
