Sheringham Women's Institute members are urging local folk to think twice before buying single use containers, and help the town achieve plastic-free status.
After nearly 30 people expressed an interest at the annual town meeting, organisers have pledged to press ahead with the initiative, which is part of a Surfers Against Sewage campaign hoping to establish 125 plastic-free communities across the UK by 2020.
WI president and town mayor Liz Withington said several local businesses were also keen to be involved and the WI, which is being supported by the town council, hoped to form a steering group to take the scheme forward.
She added: 'It's vital that businesses, local community organisations, schools, leisure facilities, youth groups and the residents of the town come together to initiate change with regard to single use plastic and make a difference, not just here in Sheringham but globally'
Anyone wanting to be involved is welcome to attend the group's first meeting, which will be held at Sheringham Community Centre at 7pm on May 21. For more information, email sheringhamplasticaware@gmail.com
