The re-opening of Sheringham Railway Station after a £1m refurbishment has been delayed for a second time.

The station was due originally due to reopen on May 6 after month-long platform replacement works, but the date was put back until today (May 16) after workers were supplied with a faulty bach of beams.

The reopening will now have to wait until Wednesday, May 22.

A Greater Anglia spokesman said they were sorry for any problems the delay was causing.

The spokesman said: "We apologise for any inconvenience resulting from this further delay to the restoration of the normal train service to Sheringham, following our major investment to improve the town's station.

"We are working very hard to complete the project as soon as we can, but there are a few final tasks to complete before the line can be re-opened and the normal service restored.

"The £1 million upgrade will deliver a significant improvement in facilities for passengers with a longer, wider platform, with new lighting and easier access, allowing longer trains to serve the station, providing more capacity for the summer season and major events in north Norfolk."

MORE: £1 million platform replacement works enter final phaseReplacement busses will continue to link Sheringham with West Runton and Cromer railway stations, from where passengers can use the Bittern Line trains to Norwich.

The new platform will be wider than the previous structure and capable of accommodating the next generation of trains.

The old 40-metre platform, which was installed in 1967, is too short to fit the new bi-mode trains, which can switch between electric and diesel power.

Christopher Taylor, from Sheringham Chamber of Trade, said after the works were announced there should have been more consultation with businesses fearing an impact on trade over the busy Easter period.

But others, including mayor Madeleine Ashcroft, welcomed the project, saying: "The new platform will improve train travel for both residents and visitors.

"The town council is really pleased that by acting as a voice for the town such a significant change has been brought about so swiftly. This will provide the impressive gateway Sheringham deserves."

The works have not affected the running of North Norfolk Railway's heritage line to Holt, which operates from a platform on the other side of Station Road.
