Prints, paintings and sculptures by 35 Norfolk artists will be up for grabs on November 19, in an auction being organised by a north Norfolk teenager to raise cash for a charity expedition to Africa.
Fifteen-year-old Ellie Glasgow, who will next year be spending four weeks working on community projects in Kenya with a group of staff and fellow students from Sheringham High School, had to raise £4,600 for pay for flights and accommodation.
Since launching a fundraising campaign at the start of the summer, she has run a pop-up café with stalls, live music, a raffle and African snacks, and raised cash at two car boot sales.
Family and friends have also supported the teenager, with her uncle providing music at the café event and her Great Aunt Margaret celebrating her 70th birthday by signing up for a sponsored abseil.
“Everyone has been so generous and with their help and support, I’m almost three-quarters of the way there,” Ellie said.
The auction, which will include contemporary artwork by well-known north Norfolk artists including Brian Lewis, Anna-Lise Horsley, Norman Mackie, Samm Robbins, Helen Herbert and Samuel Thomas, was organised with the help of Ellie’s mum Rosie, who is chairman of north Norfolk’s Coast arts festival.
The event, which is being held at the Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand, will include refreshments served up by Ellie and her mum and grandmother.
It will be followed on November 24 by a dance evening at Cromer Community Centre with dance teacher Tina Allison, who will be inviting people of all ages to dress up in their glitziest outfits to learn a routine from the hit musical Chicago.
Ellie, who is hoping her latest two events will take her close to her £4,600 goal, said: “I’m determined reach my target and it would be great to have good turnouts, especially as so many people are donating raffle prizes, refreshments and artworks, as well as their time and expertise to help me.”
Bids for artworks can be made at the auction, which starts at 6pm, or online at www.coastarts.co.uk
Chigaco dance evening tickets, which cost £8 (£4 under 18s) including a complimentary cocktail or mocktail, are also available from the Coast arts website.
