Sheringham carnival crowning day kicked off on Sunday with stalls and games on the Leas clifftop gardens, as well as other attractions including a Newfoundland rescue dog demonstrationm, a climbing wall brought along by north east Norfolk district Scouts and spectacular aerobatic displays from CAP231 and Yak 52 aircraft.

Town crier Andrew Cunningham Brown announced the arrival of carnival queen Emma Taylor, who wore a 1950s-style dress and drew up in a limousine accompanied by attendant Alisha Redgrave and prince and princess George Johnson, 9, and Ruby Lawn, 7.

After Linda Gotts-White of event sponsors Cottages.com had presented the group with tiaras, sashes and gifts, Sheringham deputy mayor Liz Withington gave a welcoming speech praising carnival chairman Stuart McClean and his team, whom she said had made sure events ran smoothly, in spite of having to make some last-minute changes to the programme to accommodate the sinkhole in High Street.

"The parade on Wednesday will follow a different, shorter route, but we are hoping that this will mean we'll have lots and lots of people with an even better atmosphere," she added.

Sheringham Carnival continues this week with family fun and games on the beach at 2.30pm on Monday (August 5), with the hugely popular street races running in Church Street and High Street from 6pm on Tuesday.

Carnival day events on Wednesday will include live music, a Punch and Judy show, a street fair and a children's fancy dress competition, with the parade setting off from Station Road car park at 6.30pm.
