The crew of the Sea Palling lifeboat station completed a challenging trek along the Norfolk coast this weekend wearing their full sea kit, including drysuit, life jacket and helmet.
The team of six crew members and two junior members began the 18-mile hike in Cromer at 8am on Saturday and successfully reached the Sea Palling lifeboat station by 4pm.
Crew member and station manager, Will Lane, said: “It went really well, we had lots of people to see us through but it left us a bit sore.
“We wore the full kit but we did decide to drop the wellies and swap them out for walking shoes.
“We would all like to thank the Stalham and Smallburgh first responders for supporting us from the start to finish and also thank family and friends for their support, walking with us part of the route and giving us a heroes welcome at the finish line.”
The walk was part of a campaign to raise enough money to refurbish the station and purchase new safety equipment for the growing number of crew members.
“We have a big plan to eventually extend the building,” continued Mr Lane. “That is going to cost a lot of money so first we are trying to refurbish what we’ve got and that means getting new cladding, a few more windows and new fire exits. We also need to get some insulation as the building doesn’t have any at present.
“In addition to that we need to purchase new kit for the crew and some more safety and first aid equipment. We’ve recently got a number of new crew members and we need to get them what they need so we can keep them safe.”
Along with the money raised through sponsorship, the crew has created a fundraising webpage with the goal of raising £2,000 and so far they have raised almost £700.
They estimate that if they are successful the combined funds could total around £3,000 which will allow a large amount of the refurbishment work to be done before Christmas.
Mr Lane added that they have recently employed a new fund raising team and plans are being put together for further events, including a pub quiz night which will take place before the end of the year.
