A schoolgirl from Norfolk has won a national film critic award.

Ruby Daniels, a student at Corpusty Primary School, won the Junior Film Critic category in the Young Film Critic of the Year Award 2008.

Her 200-word review of Kung Fu Panda beat thousands of other seven to 11 year olds who entered the competition, which is run by the charity Film Education.

Ruby, who lives in Corpusty, near Holt, said her review had both praised and criticised the film. She said: “I said I liked the end because of the message but I like things that are realistic and a fat panda doing kung fu really isn't.”

The nine-year-old travelled to London on Friday October 17 to collect her award, which was given to her by ex-Blue Peter presenter Katy Hill.

Ruby was given a certificate, trophy and a goodie-bag containing a radio and a book.

Ian Wall, director of Film Education, said: “Ruby has done amazingly well to win and blew the judges away with her insightful perspective and considered review. This could well be Ruby's first step towards a promising career within the film or media industry.”

But Ruby, who is in year five at school, said she had other plans. She said: “I have always liked literacy so I think I would rather be a literacy teacher for years three and four.”

The awards are part of this week's National Schools Film Week and offer 400,000 schoolchildren the chance to go to the cinema for free.

There are four categories for young people aged four to 19 and the closing date for next year's competition in July 17, 2009. For more information visit www.youngfilmcritic.org.
