A legion of Roman centurions, soldiers and senators marched into Sheringham Primary School, as part of a history project culminating in pitched battles in the playground.

As well as paying a visit to Norwich Castle Museum to look at ancient Roman artefacts, the 85 eight and nine-year-old youngsters taking part had a chance to make shields and swords and model Roman villas from clay.

They also unearthed Roman treasure during a sandpit archaeological dig, wrote letters from soldiers to their families and looked at how the ancient Romans lived and the lasting impact they had on the world.

Year 4 teacher Jade Murray said pupils had been “captivated” by the topic.

She added: “It was a real hands-on project that led to a whole range of activities and because we went on the trip right at the start, the children got into the roles of Romans straight away.”
