The “alcohol fuelled” antics of teenage revellers has led to the axing of a late night bus taking Norwich clubbers home to north Norfolk.

Increasing rowdiness came to head when youngsters refused to leave the 2.25am service at Aylsham, and began rocking the bus by running from side to side.

Operators Norfolk Green, who laid on the bus three years ago to meet demand and to help youngsters get home safely, have now said “enough is enough.”

Managing director Ben Colson said: “We tried to help as an experiment, but these youngsters have put two fingers up to us - so we have done it back and cancelled the service. I have a zero tolerance for this kind of thing.”

The regular driver had built up a rapport with earlier customers, who had even set up a Norfolk Green Nightbus Appreciation Society on the Facebook social networking site. But he now felt intimidated by a new younger group of passengers from Aylsham who were causing “serious havoc”, added Mr Colson.

“It started getting violent, with fights breaking out between tanked-up groups from Aylsham and Cromer,” he said.

The King's Lynn based company's website gives a stark message to the culprits, saying: “We hope that when those responsible are queuing for an expensive taxi to get them home in the future, they will feel proud that their alcohol-fuelled actions have led to this outcome for everybody.”

The service cancellation is among a raft of changes announced by Norfolk County Council which take effect from next weekend - including other axings, which are down to lack of commercially viability.

Among them are is the evening Norfolk Green 10C between Coltishall and Norwich, which is being withdrawn as few passengers use them.

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council said the authority would pay £4.5m next year to subsidise bus services which do not attract enough passengers to make them viable.

He said: “For the county council to subsidise a service, 30 pc of the cost must be covered by fares.”

He explained that some of the new changes would be minor, but said that the CoastHopper service will have a significantly improved service between Hunstanton and Sheringham.
