Fresh plans to breathe new life into clifftop park at Cromer will go out to public consultation this spring.

North Lodge Park has been home to a range of relaxing activities from putting and tennis to model boating and bowls for many generations of townsfolk and tourists.

Previous attempts to revamp the area were dropped three years ago amid a public outcry over including car parking.

Now officials have come up with a new scheme that aims to keep the park's tranquil atmosphere but provide a range of activities for all ages and all seasons.

Out would go the putting greens, tennis courts (currently a children's play area), bandstand, and footbridge.

In would come a series of themed gardens, maze, new play area, performance space with covered stage, wildlife garden and revised path layout.

North Norfolk District Council's countryside and parks manager Paul Ingham stressed they were only ideas, but hoped they would get the backing of local councillors and later, through a spring consultation, the public.

The aim was make the park more sustainable by removing putting which required high maintenance for only a seasonal use.

He felt it was a 'very good scheme' which would see the park better-used, while ensuring it remained a quiet place.

And Mr Ingham stressed the only parking shown was relocating the existing 12 spaces from in front of the lodge to near the entrance gate to lessen traffic danger.

Funding would have to involve seeking grants from lottery, play or garden scheme pots, but it needed good public support.

If - as happened with a recent skateboard park scheme in town there was major opposition - the project would struggle to get off the ground, he warned.
